Mom's Life and Money Matters: Getting Clarity on What Your College Future Looks Like

Dear Joaquin,

As many parents, do, I often wonder what your future would look like. It's a mental exercise that can sometimes be exciting and sometimes anxiety-inducing. Last summer you had an opportunity to travel by yourself to Colorado and spend a week there doing what you love. And ever since then you have been singular about moving to Colorado. During your college application, you've aligned your career interests and what your heart truly desires. And now it’s official—you’ve made it happen. You've been admitted to 3 schools in Colorado. This is such an exciting moment, and I hope you’re feeling proud of all your hard work. I have always said that if you love what you do, you never have to work one day in your life.

As we plan our college visits, I’d like for you to take some time to really think about what’s most important to you. What makes a school the right fit for you—not just for the next four years, but for the opportunities it can create afterward?

Here are a few things to consider as you weigh your options:

  1. Your Priorities: What matters most to you? If snowboarding is at the top of your list, which school offers the best access and experience? One school, for example, offers one year free ski lift passes for all of freshman year (this is huge! considering ski lifts passes cost 8-10 hours of a minimum pay job) —how does that factor into your decision?

  2. The Cost of Attendance: While all these schools are in Colorado, the cost of attending each varies greatly. Private schools have their perks, providing the individualized attention you will need, but the sticker price definitely is something to consider. Can we just buy you a house instead?? LOL!! It is important to think about whether the investment aligns with the opportunities it offers and how it compares to the other schools.

  3. Future Employment and Opportunities: What kind of internships, job placements, or connections does each school provide? How do they align with what you think you might want to pursue? Even if you’re unsure of your major right now, think about the resources each school has to help you explore and succeed.

  4. Campus Life and Culture: As we visit, pay attention to how each campus feels to you. Can you see yourself living there? Do the people, the setting, and the community feel like a place you’d thrive?

It’s okay if your priorities change as you learn more about each school. What matters is that you make a thoughtful decision that reflects what you value most.

No matter what, Dad and I are so proud of you and will love and support you with your decision. This is your journey, and we’re here to walk alongside you as you figure it all out.

Can’t wait to start this next adventure with you!

Love,Mom
